The excursion begins by picking up passengers from their hotels in El Calafate, taking Provincial Route 11 to connect with the mythical National Route 40. Bordering the eastern shore of Lake Argentino and crossing the Santa Cruz and La Leona rivers, the route runs through the valley canyon until reaching the historic roadhouse and country hotel La Leona after a 1 hour and 15 minute drive. A brief stop is made there, where visitors can tour its historical museum and enjoy coffee with regional pastries (optional).

The journey continues along the shore of Lake Viedma via Provincial Route 23, offering panoramic views of the Andes mountain range and the silhouettes of Mount Fitz Roy and Mount Torre. After traveling 220 km in approximately two and a half hours, you arrive at the mountain village of El Chaltén.

Trekking to Laguna de los Tres (El Pilar Hosteria Trail)

In El Chaltén, we meet the mountain guide and travel by vehicle to the El Río Eléctrico bridge, the trailhead.
This linear route offers a much more dynamic and varied itinerary, avoiding repeating the same path for the return trip.

First section (Piedras Blancas Forest and Glacier): The hike begins through a native forest of ñire and lenga trees with a gentle slope until reaching the viewpoint of the Piedras Blancas Glacier, an imposing hanging glacier with serac waterfalls, lateral moraines, and its glacial lagoon.

Second section (Poincenot and Río Blanco Campsites): The trail continues through forests to the Poincenot Campsite and the Río Blanco base camp. At this point, a brief pause is made before tackling the steepest and most technical section of the day.

Laguna de los Tres: After the final ascent, you reach the base of Mount Fitz Roy. You will have free time to rest, have lunch in front of the lagoon, and admire the granite walls and the Glacier de los Tres.

Return to El Chaltén and El Calafate

The descent is made via an alternative trail that borders mountain streams and visits Capri Lagoon, offering a final panoramic view of the mountain range.

At the end of the hike, you will have 45 minutes of free time in the town of El Chaltén to have an afternoon snack, drink hot chocolate, or try craft beer before undertaking the return journey to the hotels in El Calafate.
