The excursion Bosque Petrificado La Leona, departs from your accommodation (1) in El Calafate, at 09:00 hours begins the tour of the hotels, search by the guide at the reception.

Traveling 33 km, along Provincial Route No. 5 to the east and then 67 km to the north along National Route No. 40.
You can see Argentino Lake, the Santa Cruz River, the La Leona River and its beautiful valley, with panoramic views of the Andes mountain range, including Cerro Fitz Roy.

Arriving at the “La Leona” hotel – historical site – where a 15-minute stop is made.
Later we continue 10 km westwards, following the southern shore of Viedma Lake, until we reach the slope of Cerro Los Hornos (Estancia Santa Teresita).

The guide will provide explanations about geology to interpret the area.

We look for the first time into the huge terrain depression where the petrified trunks are and we begin our exploration walk among the fossils.

Halfway through the route we make a stop for lunch, an area with shelter.

Throughout the walk we will see a large number of petrified trunks that lie on the surface, some with a diameter of 1.20 meters, testimony of ancient times when the climate was very different from the current one and allowed the support of an abundant and large flora.
Occasionally, different types of dinosaurs fossil are discovered.

This property is protected from the wind by Cerro Los Hornos and because it is also a natural terrain depression.
Being in a steppe area, it is very dry and the weather conditions in general are very pleasant.

We begin the return at approximately 2:30 pm with a new stop at the Parador hotel La Leona. Returning to El Calafate around 4:30 pm.

Itinerary

• 09:00 am: beginning of the tour by the hotels (1).
  Travel to the La Leona parador, 110 km.
• 11:15 am: arrival at the La Leona parador. 15 minute stop.
• 12:00 am: entrance to the Santa Teresita ranch, Los Hornos hill.
  Geology explanation.
  Walk and fossil remains recognition.
  Time for lunch, food with drinks included.
  Continuation of trekking.
• 2:00 pm: Return to the vehicle, transfer to the La Leona parador.
  15 minute stop.
  Departure towards El Calafate.
• 4:30 pm: approximate arrival in El Calafate.
